University of Calgary Hip Hop and Funk Styles Club

The Hip Hop and Funk Styles Club is an on-campus social club at the University of Calgary. The mandate of the club is to promote awareness of hip hop culture within the university community. As the club’s President, I provided leadership and vision for the club and its members by planning and conducting the programming during the Fall and Winter semesters (2009-2011). I recruited and hired teachers to teach workshops specializing in old school hip hop (i.e. breakin’, poppin’, and lockin’) and urban dance styles (i.e. house dance). I was responsible for recruiting members and delegating tasks to ensure that the club ran smoothly.

As a club, we also organized and planned the club’s two annual events: One Touch and It Takes 2, with proceeds going to charities such as UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, and STAND against Darfur. I also generated partnerships and involvement with various outside community events such as: 5 Kings and City vs. City.

I continue to actively support the Hip Hop and Funk Styles Club as an advisor, and an on-site volunteer for their events, as well as producing graphic design materials for their promotional needs.
